When memphis band Xavion topped the MTV charts back in the mid-80s, it was the hard-driving funk rock of their video hit "Eat Your Heart Out" that got them there. One of the pioneer music channel's most requested songs at that time, the tune was an enigma-with a searing vocal hook tripled on top of an R&B rhythm track and Hendrix-style guitar riffs.
Look out Memphis! Xavion is back-and the band's sound is just as hard-driving today as it was then.
With almost two decades off for good behavior, the band is ready to spend some of that pent up musical energy-and seemingly endless, ageless musical ability.
Xavion reborn remains a curious, compelling contradiction. The band's high-energy rock and soul sound is layered with almost every popular music style. From key changes more common to contemporary jazz to supercharging blues and R&B bass licks, Xavion proves they are not only back, but back with a vengeance and playing to stay.
And the voice that carried them to MTV fame-perfectly pitched with raw charisma-is still right up front.
"If you build it, they will listen," says lead singer Dexter Haygood. "It's like a blueprint. We're building a sound to last and keep people listening."
The blueprint reference is a good analogy. What lesser musicians might make a mess of, Xavion constructs with the art of master craftsmen. You not only hear the music, you feel it- and the dance floor pulsates continually with fans too caught up in sound to stop moving.
Like all finely-crafted creations, a masterpiece begins with a talent and skill, but it also has that indefinable, inimitable quality that makes it something more. Xavion has that something. Look out Memphis! Watch out world!
